How to Diversify Beyond a Single Prop Firm

Odd subject for a prop firm to publish, and most traders get it wrong in both directions. Either they ignore it, or they open four accounts and call it risk management. How to diversify beyond a single prop firm starts with being clear which risk you are addressing.

What Happens When a Firm Winds Down

Finance Magnates reported that somewhere between 80 and 100 prop firms shut down during 2024 alone. The industry consolidated hard, and a lot of traders found out what their account was worth.

The pattern in documented closures is consistent. A firm announces it is winding down, publishes a refund or payout process, and delivery is never independently verified. Across a sourced closure tracker covering more than two dozen firms, most entries read exactly that way.

Some went further. The Funded Trader paused in March 2024, resumed in August, and court filings showed a backlog of roughly 1,272 traders still waiting by March 2025. Funded Engineer ended in bankruptcy with a default judgment against it. My Forex Funds had funds frozen after CFTC action.

Here is the part that matters. Your balance is a contractual claim against a company, not money held for you. If the company fails you are an unsecured creditor, behind lenders, staff and tax authorities.

Running One Strategy at Three Firms Is Not Diversification

This is where most traders go wrong, and it is arithmetic rather than judgment.

If the same approach runs at three firms, one market event breaches all three at once. The drawdown limits measure the same way, your positions move together, and the correlation between those outcomes sits close to one.

You have tripled your challenge fees and diversified nothing.

Real separation means the accounts can fail independently. Different instruments, different session timings, or different risk settings, so a bad day for one is not automatically a bad day for all three.

What Is Worth Spreading

Four things, roughly in order of how much they matter.

The firm itself. Counterparty risk is the one genuine driver, and a second firm is the only answer to it.

The payout rail. If both firms pay through the same processor, one payment failure stops everything.

The rule model. Trailing drawdown from a high water mark and static drawdown from the opening balance punish different mistakes. TTT Markets runs trailing 8 percent on the 1-Step and static 8 percent on the 2-Step, which diverge sharply after a winning run.

The platform. The 2024 MetaQuotes restrictions removed terminals from firms with little notice, and firms sharing one technology stack carry that risk together.

Keep It Proportionate

None of this is free.

FPFX Tech data put typical lifecycle spend near 800 dollars across about three challenges per account. Doubling your firm count doubles that before you have earned anything.

It also splits your capital. Two 50k accounts are not one 100k account, because each carries its own drawdown limit and you cannot move risk between them.

Every firm adds a rule set to track. More rules, more chances to breach one you misread.

Two firms cover most of the counterparty risk. Four mostly adds admin.

Conclusion – How to Diversify Beyond a Single Prop Firm

How to diversify beyond a single prop firm comes down to a second firm with a different rule model and a different payout rail, running something that will not breach at the same moment as the first. Not four accounts on one strategy. The honest reason for any of it is that your payout is a claim against a company, which is worth knowing before you need it to be true.

FAQ – How to Diversify Beyond a Single Prop Firm

1. How many firms should I use?

Two addresses most of the counterparty risk. Past that, costs and rule tracking grow faster than the benefit.

2. Is running the same bot at two firms diversification?

No. Identical positions breach identical limits on the same day. Separate the accounts by instrument, timing or risk settings, or you have only duplicated the fee.

3. What happens to my balance if a firm closes?

It becomes an unsecured claim. Closures usually come with an announced refund process, and in most documented cases nobody verified traders were actually paid.
