Consumer Confidence Data and Market Sentiment

Two separate surveys claim to measure how American consumers feel, they are published within weeks of each other, and they frequently point in opposite directions.

Consumer confidence data and market sentiment gets confusing precisely because of that. The surveys are not competing versions of the same number. They ask different people different questions and pick up different things.

Why Anyone Cares

Personal consumption accounts for roughly 70% of US GDP, which makes consumer attitudes a genuine input into growth expectations rather than a curiosity.

If households expect their finances to deteriorate, spending follows, and spending is most of the economy. That is the whole reason a survey of feelings moves markets.

The Two Surveys Are Not the Same

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index publishes on the last Tuesday of each month, surveying around 5,000 households. It is more influenced by employment and labour market conditions.

The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index runs twice monthly, a preliminary reading around mid month and a final at month end, from a much smaller sample of roughly 500 to 600 households with more detailed questions. It focuses more on household finances and the impact of inflation, and it is historically more sensitive to petrol prices.

That difference in emphasis is why they diverge. In March 2026 the Conference Board rose for a third consecutive month to 92.8 while the Michigan index fell to 49.8, its lowest reading on record. Both were correct about what they were measuring. One tracked a labour market that was holding up, the other tracked household purchasing power that was not.

Economists generally treat Michigan as the better leading indicator of future consumer spending, given its focus on personal finances, while the Conference Board is better at capturing labour conditions that have already turned.

The Gap Between Them Is a Signal

Because the two measure different pressures, the spread between them carries information.

A widening gap, with confidence high and sentiment low, typically means the labour market is solid while inflation is squeezing households. A narrowing gap suggests the two forces are converging.

For a trader, that is more useful than either number in isolation. It tells you which side of the economy is under strain.

Market Reaction in Practice

Modest, most months, and the preliminary Michigan reading usually carries more market impact than the final revision.

The mechanism runs through growth and rate expectations. Weak confidence supports the easing case and pressures the dollar. Strong confidence does the reverse.

Where it matters more is when the reading contradicts other data, or when it lands far from consensus. In July 2026 the Michigan preliminary came in at 54.4 against expectations of 51.0, a sizeable beat, which is the kind of miss that produces an actual move.

Inflation expectations inside the Michigan survey are worth watching separately. Year ahead expectations easing from 4.6% to 4.2% while long run held at 3.3% is a Fed relevant detail buried under the headline.

Trading It

Treat both as second tier. Neither is payrolls.

Watch the preliminary Michigan rather than the final, and read the inflation expectations component rather than only the headline.

Conclusion – Consumer Confidence Data and Market Sentiment

Consumer confidence data and market sentiment reduces to two surveys measuring different pressures on the same household. Labour conditions on one side, prices and purchasing power on the other. When they disagree, the disagreement is the information.

FAQ – Consumer Confidence Data and Market Sentiment

1. Which survey matters more to markets?

The Michigan preliminary reading typically produces the larger reaction, partly because it arrives first and partly because it carries inflation expectations.

2. Why do the two indices contradict each other?

Different sample sizes, different questions and different emphasis. The Conference Board leans on labour conditions, Michigan on household finances and prices.

3. Is consumer confidence a leading indicator?

Michigan is generally regarded as the better leading signal for consumer spending. The Conference Board tends to reflect labour conditions that have already shifted.
